An Ancient Practice Cures a Modern Ailment: Fatigue

By Dr. Renae Haldeman · New to some of these words? See the glossary.

Acupuncture has been used for at least 3,000 years, and it has many practical uses. Our fast-paced modern world can take a heavy toll on our health.

How can we keep up when tiredness weighs on us so heavily? Whether it is emotional, mental, or physical, fatigue is very common in life today. How can we use the ancient practice of acupuncture to help cure this modern plague of fatigue?

Acupuncture works in several ways that make good health sense. It activates and balances the body’s qi (say “chee,” your energy flow), which leads to more restful sleep. It also changes how we respond to a stressful world. Balancing your qi affects your hormone balance, helps the body release endorphins (the body’s natural feel-good chemicals), increases blood flow, and improves the body’s overall flow of energy.

In short, acupuncture is the crown of classical Chinese Medicine. Acupuncture knows how to get the job done. The beauty of the body is that it wants to find balance. The body will try to settle into the habits it was born with to find that balance, whether those habits are good or bad. It needs balance, even if finding it costs the body something important.

A young mother who was trying to get pregnant came to our office for support with fertility and energy. The stress of going through IVF, along with tiredness from exercise, left her at about 50-60% energy on a normal day. After her most recent round of IVF, she also began having constipation. After just two acupuncture treatments, her energy level was 80-90% on most days.

Whether your fatigue comes from fertility treatment, stress at work, or trouble sleeping, acupuncture should be your first line of defense against this problem of modern life.
